StreetWitness

What is this?

StreetWitness is an open-source, privacy-first tool for documenting law enforcement activity in public spaces.

It exists to document power, protect civilians, preserve evidence, and support accountability.

How it works

  1. Enter your access code to begin recording
  2. Record encounters in public spaces
  3. Video is uploaded, compressed, and stripped of device metadata
  4. Stored on decentralised networks (IPFS)
  5. Preserved as public record

Privacy

  • No accounts or personal data required
  • No tracking cookies or analytics
  • Location reduced to block level (~100m)
  • Device metadata stripped from videos
  • Videos cannot be linked to uploaders

We cannot identify you.

What it's for

StreetWitness is for documenting interactions with police and other law enforcement officers in public spaces.

It helps preserve evidence when memory is unreliable and power is unequal.

What it's not for

StreetWitness is not for reporting neighbours, monitoring communities, sharing private disputes, or harassment.

Misuse undermines trust and will be removed.

Safety

Your safety matters.

  • Do not interfere with officers
  • Do not escalate situations

Recording is legal in many public settings, but laws vary. Know your rights.
